Liz Kendall MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Social Care, commenting on the Care Quality Commission’s insight report into how coronavirus is impacting care homes, said “This report from the CQC highlights the extreme pressures the coronavirus pandemic has put on social care providers. The number of care homes experiencing outbreaks of the virus continues to increase showing there just hasn’t been the ‘protective ring’. around care homes that Ministers claim.
“Shortages of PPE, difficulties in accessing testing and extreme financial worries all continue to impact the social care system that is already overstretched and under-resourced.
“The spread of this virus is also having a terrible impact on our vital social care staff, who feel undervalued compared to their NHS counterparts. Staff are making difficult decisions that they should not be forced to make – choosing between self-isolating and going to work to cover the absences of their colleagues.
“The Government must learn the lessons from mistakes made so far so they put in place the right measures in future, and ensure all care services get the priority, resources and support they need to stop the spread of this awful virus.’
