Diane Abbott, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, commenting on the Conservatives’ stop and search announcement, said “This is just posturing on crime and Boris Johnson knows it.
“Johnson supported Tory cuts to the police and has no plans to restore the frontline officers that successive Tory governments have axed. Just as he never did make good on his promise to recruit ‘thousands of extra police’ as London Mayor.
“The Tories really aren’t putting 20,000 extra officers on the streets to tackle the knife crime that has soared under them. And they do not intend to do anything about the youth services they cut, or the funding for drug prevention or the increase in school exclusions that have all contributed to rising crime. Tinkering with police powers cannot disguise Tory failure for almost a decade.”
