Tony Lloyd MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, commenting on today’s changes to the law in Northern Ireland regarding abortion and marriage equality, said “This historic day means that women and same sex couples in Northern Ireland will no longer be treated as second class citizens.
“Labour has long supported campaigns for equal marriage and women’s rights to safe and legal abortions to finally be extended to Northern Ireland. We will work in Parliament to ensure measures are brought forward that guarantee the highest quality of care for women and to ensure that, regardless of sexuality, love is treated equally in all parts of the UK.
“This great achievement for human rights in Northern Ireland has taken a long time, especially with the Conservative government turning a blind eye to placate their partners in the DUP. We pay tribute to the campaigners and activists who have made this happen. This is a victory for them and for all in Northern Ireland seeking to build a more equal society.”
