Gill Furniss MP, Labour’s Shadow Steel Minister, commenting on the release of UK Steel’s Energy Price Disparity Report that shows UK steel producers today pay 62% more for electricity than their competitors in Germany, and 80% more than those in France, said ‘‘This is a damning indictment of the government’s utter failure to address the fundamental issues facing the steel sector.
‘’It’s been two years since the steel companies and unions came together to put forward a comprehensive steel sector proposal to government, including specific proposals to reduce the energy price disparity. This has fallen on deaf ears with government effectively scrapping any hope of agreeing a deal.
‘’The Tories continue to treat our steel sector with contempt, but their inaction is having a real impact on the productivity and sustainability of the sector.
‘’Labour will create a level playing field for UK steel producers by addressing the energy price disparity, preventing steel dumping, and investing in R&D so that our sector can compete and thrive globally and take full advantage of the opportunities created by a Labour government with a real industrial strategy.’’
