Defence Secretary should clarify government policy on torture

Nia Griffith MP, Labour’s Shadow Defence Secretary, responding to news reports that government has been accused of developing a secret policy on torture, said “These revelations are extremely concerning. There can be no justification whatsoever for torture and no UK Minister should be authorising any action where there is a risk of it leading to torture.

“This policy appears to contradict the position taken by successive governments that the UK opposes torture in all circumstances. It is vital that the Defence Secretary comes to Parliament to clarify the government’s policy as a matter of urgency.”
