Tony Lloyd MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Northern Ireland, commenting on today’s Supreme Court ruling regarding the case of Pat Finucane.
“Today’s Supreme Court ruling clearly shows the need for a fresh investigation into the murder of Pat Finucane, and one that is compliant with Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights.
“Victims and survivors in Northern Ireland deserve truth and justice, for which the Finucane family have been fighting for 30 years. Labour is calling on the government to commit to a fresh investigation into this tragic murder.
“Robust investigative mechanisms need to be established. The governments must bring forward proposals on the Stormont House Agreement legacy bodies, so the Historical Investigation Unit and an effective process for recovering the truth can be established.
“Labour is committed to building on the peace process and promoting reconciliation across Northern Ireland. Karen Bradley and the Prime Minister need to do more to bridge the many divides in Northern Ireland. They must bring together Northern Ireland’s political leaders to establish a timetable and process for the restoration on the devolved institutions.”
