Andy McDonald MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, commenting on the agreement between RMT and ACAS, said “Labour welcomes this hugely positive news for the north of England. A guarantee of a guard on every train would be a huge win for passenger safety and rail accessibility.
“We pay tribute to the contribution of Labour’s northern leaders including Steve Rotheram, Judith Blake and Andy Burnham as well as the RMT in finding a breakthrough.
“Last year’s agreement on Greater Anglia showed that a deal could be done on driver only operation with the appropriate will and determination. We sincerely hope Chris Grayling won’t stand in the way of all parties making further progress on this and await further developments.”
