Anneliese Dodds MP, Shadow Treasury Minister, commenting on Tax Justice Network’s report ‘Brass necks and boilerplate’, revealing that the Conservatives’ requirements on tax disclosure have failed, said “This research on some of the biggest multinational companies’ tax strategies shows that the Government is yet again failing to get to grips with corporate tax practices. Many responses are highly similar to each other and very brief. Tax strategies for some multinational companies are also not obviously accessible to the public.”
“It is simply unacceptable that a substantial number of multinational firms appear to be demonstrating a blatant disregard for the law.
“A Labour government will properly resource HMRC so that it can engage meaningfully with companies and introduce a series of measures including a general anti-avoidance rule that will ensure that there is compliance. Only in that way can we ensure a proper level playing field for those businesses – often small and medium-sized – which face unfair competition because of tax avoidance.”
